Jewell leads the rearguard
Tasmania had begun the match badly. NSW won the toss and bowled, and debutants Jake Scott and Bryce Jackson did the damage on day one before Tasmania were dismissed for 245 early on day two. NSW then declared on 500 for 9, which left Tasmania batting a long way behind.
Jordan Silk made 16 before he was out with the score on 66 for 1. Caleb Jewell then anchored the innings, batting through 159 balls for his 88 until Sean Abbott bowled him with the score at 156 for 2 in the 57th over.
Tim Ward and Teague Wyllie dug in after that. They saw off the rest of the day without being separated and took Tasmania from 156 for 2 to 203 for 2 at stumps. Ward is unbeaten on 49 off 169 balls and Wyllie on 33 off 80 balls. Abbott had one wicket from 15 overs, five of them maidens, for 25 runs at the stumps check, and Charlie Stobo went wicketless with 13 overs, six maidens and 23 runs.
What Tasmania need on day four
The first target is simple. Tasmania need 53 more runs to wipe out the deficit and force NSW to bat again, which would take the innings defeat off the table. NSW still lead by 52, so the first hour on Sunday will decide how much pressure the batting side is under.
With a full day left to bat out, Ward and Wyllie must keep the slow, patient approach that worked on Saturday. Two more wickets quickly would put NSW back in control.
