Tanzid's innings and the near record

Tanzid set the tone early, taking 15 runs off a Yamin Ahmadzai over with two fours, and then went after Mohammad Saleem as Bangladesh passed fifty in the 10th over. He brought up his own fifty against the part-time bowling of Hashmatullah Shahidi, then hit left-arm spinner Zia-ur-Rehman for sixes in two consecutive overs.

He fell about 15 minutes before lunch, edging Ismat Alam to wicketkeeper Ikram Alikhil, who was standing up to the stumps. The dismissal came while Tanzid was closing in on a second Test century, and it left him just short of Tamim Iqbal's Bangladesh record for the most runs in a Test's first session, the 86 Tamim made against New Zealand at Hamilton in 2019.

Shadman's second life and the lone wicket

Shadman was 41 not out at lunch after a life early on. Shahidi dropped him on 5 at short cover in the seventh over, bowled by Yamin, a chance also noted in Cricbuzz's live coverage. He later hit two fours off Ismat, who finished the session with the only wicket, 1 for 17.

Mominul Haque walked in and was 5 not out at the break, getting off the mark with an upper-cut boundary in the last over of the session. For Afghanistan, it was Rahmat Shah's first Test as captain, with Ikram Alikhil as vice-captain.

What it sets up

At 134 for 1, Bangladesh have a strong platform from a session in which only one wicket fell and the scoring rate stayed high. Afghanistan will look to their spinners after lunch to pull things back, with Shadman and Mominul at the crease.
