How it happened

West Indies were put in to bat and slipped to 44 for 3 in the powerplay. A 63-run stand between captain Shai Hope and Sherfane Rutherford rebuilt the innings, but debutant Naman Dhir removed Hope and ripped through the middle order on his way to 3 for 31. Axar Patel added 2 for 26, including a double-wicket maiden, as West Indies were bowled out for 171 on the first ball of the 20th over.

Iyer takes over

India's chase hit a wobble early. Abhishek Sharma made a quick 21 off 10 before Roston Chase dismissed him, and Akeal Hosein and Chase removed both openers inside the first four overs with India at 35 for 2. What followed was the Shreyas Iyer show.

Iyer dominated from the moment he walked in, tearing into the attack with 10 fours and six sixes in a breathtaking 102 not out off 43 balls, reaching his maiden T20I hundred off 42 balls. Ishan Kishan played the perfect foil with a composed 37 not out off 27, and the pair put on an unbeaten 137 off 67 to kill the chase in 14.4 overs. Iyer finished the game with the winning runs.

What it means

This was India's tenth consecutive full T20I win, a streak that underlines just how dominant they have become in the format. It also gives India a 1-0 lead in the five-match series after the ODI leg, where Lucknow had served up far tougher batting conditions.

"I was actually thinking about getting my maiden T20I century and it came through. Winning tastes different. Today it was me who finished off the game," Iyer said after collecting the Player of the Match award.
