The platform was a 124-run opening stand between Tanzid Hasan, who hit 83 off 71 balls with eight fours and four sixes, and Shadman Islam, who made 67 off 111. After that, Afghanistan clawed their way in and at one stage took five wickets for 101 runs, a spell that included Mushfiqur Rahim for 0 off seven balls. Litton Das, who made 53 off 89, and Mehidy Hasan Miraz, who added 24 off 67, then put on 62 for the sixth wicket to lift the total towards 300. Mominul Haque made 39 off 70 and captain Najmul Hossain Shanto 29 off 42.
Saleem and the Afghanistan pace effort
Saleem was the pick of the bowlers with 4 for 82 from 23 overs. Yamin Ahmadzai backed him up with 3 for 79 in 20.3 overs, and Ismat Alam was the most economical, taking 2 for 20 in 12.4 overs. Qais Ahmad finished with 1 for 60 in 14.2 overs.
It was a useful first outing for Rahmat Shah, who is captaining Afghanistan in a Test as full-time skipper for the first time. The match is also Bangladesh's first Test at a neutral venue and their first in the UAE, with Afghanistan the nominal home side.
