From 124 for 6 to 390: how the innings was built
Australia had been 124 for 6 on day one before closing on 187 for 6 in 65.2 overs, with bad light stopping play early. They resumed on that score on day two, and Renshaw carried the innings from there. His fifty had come off 117 balls, he reached his hundred off 204 balls just before lunch, and he passed 150 off 311 balls.
He added 86 for the seventh wicket with Pat Cummins, who made 43 off 98 balls, and then 134 for the ninth wicket with Nathan Lyon, who made 27 off 92 balls. Renshaw was the last man out, caught by Markram at slip off Harmer shortly after tea for 190, his innings lasting 397 balls. Marnus Labuschagne made 37, Steven Smith 25 and Alex Carey 14, and extras contributed 30.
For South Africa, Mulder took 4 for 68, Jansen 3 for 68 and Nortje 2 for 88, so the three seamers shared nine wickets. The two spinners took one wicket between them in 48.2 overs. Renshaw was struck on the helmet grille by a 143 kph Nortje delivery on day two, received attention and batted on.
The records and the tail stands
Renshaw's only previous Test hundred was 184 against Pakistan at the SCG in January 2017, so this is his second Test century, almost ten years later, and a career best. ESPNcricinfo notes it is the fourth-highest score by an Australian in South Africa, and Reuters reports it as the highest by a No. 5 batter in Tests at Kingsmead.
Of his runs, 174 came while batting with the last four batters, which the report describes as the most in a Test innings batting with the tail since 2002. He is also the first Australian to face 300 balls in a Test innings since Usman Khawaja against Sri Lanka in Galle in early 2025.
The 134 with Lyon for the ninth wicket is described by ESPNcricinfo as the second-highest ninth-wicket stand for Australia in Tests. Reuters reports it as a record ninth-wicket stand for Australia against South Africa and the highest for that wicket in Durban.
Hazlewood strikes and the day three position
South Africa lost Rickelton for 0 in the reply, caught by Beau Webster at third slip off Hazlewood. Hazlewood finished the day with 1 for 9 in 4 overs, and Mitchell Starc went wicketless with 0 for 16. Markram on 15 and Bedingham on 12 were unbeaten when bad light ended play, with South Africa 27 for 1 in 8.4 overs, still 363 runs behind.
Day one offered bounce and seam, batting eased on day two, and spin is expected to matter later in the match. Australia are without Cameron Green, who missed the game through injury.
