What happened

The PCB announced the dates for the 12th edition of the PSL through a media release, which named no venues. The league ran in February-March from its inception in 2016 through the 2024 edition, then moved to April-May from 2025 because of ICC tournaments: the Champions Trophy hosted by Pakistan in 2025 and the T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka in 2026. PSL 2026, the 11th edition, was played from March 26 to May 3.

Since moving entirely to Pakistan in 2020, the league has mostly been staged in Karachi, Lahore, Multan and Rawalpindi. Faisalabad and Peshawar were added as new venues last year, but PSL 11 was limited to Lahore and Karachi because of government fuel-preservation measures, and was played behind closed doors except for the final.

How the decision was made

The story says the PCB and the franchises deliberated moving PSL 12 to January-February at a governing council meeting last month but failed to reach a consensus. The PCB then sought the preferences of all eight franchises over email, and the majority voted for the March-May window.

The January-February option was deemed logistically unviable. Punjab, home to three of the four traditional venues (Lahore, Multan and Rawalpindi), has harsh winters with fog-hit visibility, and the business end of the tournament would have fallen in Ramadan, as it did in 2024.

The window is not popular with everyone. Walee Technologies, which owns the PSL media rights until 2029 and also owns one of the two new teams, Rawalpindiz, is unhappy because broadcast revenue after Ramadan is thin: most advertisers exhaust their marketing and TV ad budgets during the holy month. The last two PSL seasons were held after Ramadan, and so will 2027, with Ramadan running from early February to early March.

Why the clash matters

For IPL fans, the overlap is about overseas-player availability and attention. Reports suggest the IPL will run from March 10 to May 15, 2027, which would put the two leagues side by side for almost the whole PSL window, though the story itself does not give IPL dates.

It is also a story of franchise owners outvoting the broadcaster-friendly option. A post-Ramadan PSL again means thin ad revenue for Walee, yet the majority of franchises still chose March-May over a January-February window the story calls logistically unviable.
