Queensland fold to 68 after a new-ball burst

Queensland had built a healthy position. They made 307 in the first innings, with Jimmy Peirson unbeaten on 101 and Jack Clayton adding 82, and Western Australia replied with just 175, Xavier Bartlett taking 5 for 48. That gave Queensland a lead of 132 and left the visitors firmly in control going into the third day.

The second innings unravelled almost at once. Joel Paris removed both openers, Hugh Weibgen and Angus Lovell, in the very first over, and Queensland were soon 5 for 13. Richardson then carried on the work, finishing with 5 for 19 from 9.1 overs, while Paris ended with 3 for 21. Hayden Kerr's 22 was the highest score in an innings that lasted only 25.1 overs.

A chase of 201 and the Hardie-Paris stand

Western Australia were left to chase 201, and the start was far from smooth. Sam Whiteman made 40, but the hosts slipped to 83 for 5, with Queensland still very much in the contest.

Captain Aaron Hardie and Paris steadied things. Hardie was 48 not out off 71 balls and Paris 19 not out off 70 balls, and together they put on an unbroken 51 before poor light ended play with WA on 134 for 5. The match is now finely balanced heading into day four.

Richardson's recall push and the day four task

For Richardson, the performance carries weight beyond this match. The 30-year-old has played four Tests since his debut in 2019, with injuries repeatedly breaking up his international career. He said he has had a small taste of Test cricket and desperately wants to get back there.

He also pointed to his workload as a good sign, saying he bowled 30-odd overs for Australia A in India recently and another 29 or 30 in this match, which he feels sets him up well for the rest of the season. With Australia facing at least 20 Tests in the next 12 months, a fit and firing Richardson could come into contention for a recall.

WA need 67 more runs on Sunday, but they have a worry. Opener Sam Fanning, who top-scored with 64 in the first innings, hobbled off with an apparent hamstring problem and it is unclear whether he can bat if needed. Illness has also moved through the WA camp during this match.
