Bryce Jackson's first Shield wicket
Jackson is 26 and moved from Western Australia to New South Wales after being unable to break into WA's Shield side. He was WA's leading wicket-taker in domestic one-dayers last season and played for Australia A in last year's Top End series against Sri Lanka A.
On debut he bowled 15 overs, 3 of them maidens, for 36 runs and three wickets. His first Shield wicket was Tasmanian captain Jordan Silk, caught behind for 5.
Jake Scott's day-best figures
Scott finished with 16-5-35-4, the best figures of the day. He had already made his state debut in NSW's One-Day Cup win over Queensland at Allan Border Field, where he scored an unbeaten 52 off 39 balls.
His wickets included Caleb Jewell, out for 50 caught by NSW captain Charlie Stobo, and McDermott, the last wicket to fall on the day, caught at gully by Stobo.
The collapse and McDermott's 77
Silk fell for 5, Jewell made 50 and Ward 38. Then four wickets fell for five runs, with Teague Wyllie and Jake Doran both out for ducks, leaving Tasmania 5-108.
McDermott, batting at No.5, steadied the innings with 77 off 148 balls and brought up 3,500 Sheffield Shield runs along the way. Bradley Hope made 16 before being run out by Sean Abbott, Will Prestwidge 12 and Caelan Maladay 17. Gabe Bell (7) and Marcus Bean (2) were unbeaten at stumps.
A depleted NSW side
NSW were without their stars: Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, Nathan Lyon, Steve Smith and Mitchell Starc are in the Australian Test squad, as is Nic Maddinson after a shock call-up. Sam Konstas, Josh Philippe, Lachlan Shaw, Ben Dwarshuis and Tanveer Sangha are away with the Australia A one-day tourists. Stobo became NSW's 123rd first-class captain, with Abbott his deputy.
