A first for a Bangladesh pacer
Mahmud is the first Bangladesh pace bowler to take a Test hat-trick, and only the second Bangladesh bowler ever to do it. The first came 23 years ago, when leg-spinner Alok Kapali took one against Pakistan in Peshawar in August 2003, removing Shabbir Ahmed, Danish Kaneria and Umar Gul in consecutive deliveries.
It was part of a five-wicket haul for Mahmud. His other two wickets were Sediqullah Atal, caught by Tanzid Hasan for 17, and Yamin Ahmadzai, caught by Litton for 0. Ebadot Hossain took 3 wickets, Abdul Malik, Shahidullah and Mohammad Saleem, and Mehidy Hasan Miraz stumped Hashmatullah Shahidi for 0.
Rahmat holds the innings together
Afghanistan captain Rahmat Shah was the one batter who stood firm. He was on 86 when the hat-trick fell and finished unbeaten on 105 off 216 balls, with 10 fours and 2 sixes, the only hundred of the innings. Abdul Malik added 62 off 120 balls, with 4 fours and a six, before falling to Ebadot.
Bangladesh then reached 31 for 0 in their second innings, a lead of 137 going into day four.
