Neil Brand smashed 152 with 16 fours and five sixes as a CSA Invitation XI piled up 318 for 7 on day one in Potchefstroom, while Australia spread the load across 11 bowlers and Cameron Green sat out with serious doubt over the Durban opener.
Neil Brand gave Australia a bruising reminder on day one of their two-day tour match in Potchefstroom, hammering 152 for a CSA Invitation XI as the hosts closed on 318 for 7 in 90 overs. Australia chose to field by agreement, but the attack never unsettled Brand: his 16 fours and five sixes came from a display of crisp strokeplay, his century arrived from 144 balls when he flicked Marnus Labuschagne away, and he was reprieved on 66 when Steve Smith dropped him at midwicket. Australia bat tomorrow.

Green out, Renshaw's relief
The scoreboard told only half the story. As expected, Cameron Green did not feature, with significant doubt around his availability for the opening Test after picking up an abdominal injury in the final ODI. Matt Renshaw also did not field at all after the blow on the wrist he took three days ago, but there was better news on the opener: he faced throwdowns in the nets during the morning and, for now, is not considered a doubt to take his place in the Test side.
Eleven bowlers, one century
Australia treated the day as a low-intensity workload exercise, far removed from what will greet them at Kingsmead. Nathan Lyon and Matthew Kuhnemann bowled 26 overs between them, Pat Cummins opened with a four-over spell, and Beau Webster became the 11th bowler used, taken for 41 in five overs. The wickets were shared: Josh Hazlewood took 1 for 17, including Lesego Senokwane caught at first slip, while Cummins trapped Tshepang Dithole lbw, Kuhnemann had Joshua Richards caught at mid-on, Lyon pinned Jiveshan Pillay lbw, Cooper Connolly bowled Jorich van Schalkwyk round the legs as he attempted a paddle sweep, and Michael Neser trapped Jean du Plessis lbw for a neat 41. Van Schalkwyk, from South Africa's recent Under-19 sides, had shared a 74-run fifth-wicket stand with Brand. The final over of the day saw every Australian fielder posted on the boundary.
Draft the Test-hungry outsider
This is the BuildXI lesson of the day: the hungriest player on the field is often the one with the most to prove. You spin eleven real IPL squads from 2008 to 2025, take one player from each, and play a full season with the XI you end up with. A pick with Brand's appetite, fresh and fearless against the best in the world, is the kind of selection that wins you a season before the favourites have woken up. The target is 14-0: fourteen league games, fourteen wins.
