Beth Mooney's 100th ODI: World Cup revenge on her mind, an Olympic dream in her sights

Beth Mooney plays her 100th ODI against Bangladesh in Brisbane on Wednesday, still driven by the 2025 World Cup semi-final loss to India and eyeing the 2028 and 2032 Olympics.

Australia's Beth Mooney reaches a century of ODI caps on Wednesday, and she is not treating it as a farewell lap. The 32-year-old wicketkeeper-batter is carrying a grudge from last year's World Cup and a long-range dream that runs through Los Angeles and her own back yard in Brisbane.

The revenge file

About 12 months on, the semi-final defeat to India still stings. Mooney describes the disappointment as bitter, and says it still "sticks in the craw". She sees a parallel with 2017, when England beat India in the final and Australia had already lost the ODI crown. That hurt fed the side that won the title back in 2022.

So the plan is simple to state. Play well enough over the next few years to press for a spot at the 2029 World Cup, and keep adding to a 50-over game that is changing around her. Australia did win the Women's T20 World Cup earlier this year, their seventh title in that format, but the 50-over wound is the one she keeps coming back to.

The Olympics dream

Cricket will be played at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and is likely to return at the 2032 Games in Brisbane, the city Mooney now calls home. She will be 38 by then. She calls the Olympics an enticing reason to stay around longer, and a 2032 swan song is on the table if she is still performing and contributing.

She is careful not to get ahead of herself. That is a long way away, and for now her focus is on contributing to this side and helping the younger players around her.

The Bangladesh series

The milestone arrives in the third and final ODI of a series Australia have already won. Game two was sealed inside 20 overs: openers Georgia Voll and Phoebe Litchfield put on 162 in a nine-wicket win, with Voll's unbeaten 131 trumping a 118 from Bangladesh's Mostary.
