Three reprieves, one hundred

It was not a clean innings. Litton was dropped three times in the second innings: on 14, when Shahidullah put down a slip catch off Mohammad Saleem; on 26, when Qais Ahmad could not hold a return catch off his own bowling; and on 67. Mehidy Hasan Miraz was also let off twice. Afghanistan spilled chance after chance and Bangladesh's two batters made them pay.

Litton went from 98 to his hundred with a pull through square leg, his seventh in Tests, off 115 balls. It came on top of the 53 he made in the first innings, and he has also taken five dismissals as wicketkeeper in the match. Not a bad Test for a captain. He then edged Saleem behind to Ikram Alikhil for 102, having batted 182 minutes and hit 14 fours.

Declared on cue

Bangladesh did not wait. The moment Litton went, they declared, leaving Mehidy unbeaten on 52 off 97 balls after the 149-run seventh-wicket stand. The sequence had been plain all day: day three closed on 223 for 6 with a lead of 329, built on Mushfiqur Rahim's 81 off 148 and Najmul Hossain Shanto's 82 off 191. The fourth morning was wicketless, 337 for 6 at lunch, lead 443, with Litton on 81 off 96 and Mehidy on 38 off 74.

Putting the bat away straight after the captain's hundred is Bangladesh turning the screw. They have the runs, they have the time, and now the pressure is on the other dressing room.

479 or bust

Afghanistan's first innings of 240 had real moments, with Rahmat Shah unbeaten on 105, but Hasan Mahmud took 5 for 55 including a hat-trick and Ebadot Hossain 4 for 56. Now they face 479, the rest of day four and all of day five, with Cricbuzz's scorecard showing them 12 for 1 at the time of the cross-check, needing 467 more.

There is no draw to bat for unless the top order digs in for the better part of two days. Survive or collapse, and with that target on the board, the pressure sits squarely on the top order.
