Bad light is becoming the story of the Durban Test with Australia 139 ahead

Australia lead South Africa by 139 at 33 for no loss on day three in Durban, but fading light has already cost around 45 overs and may decide the Test.

Bad light is becoming the defining story of the first Test between South Africa and Australia at Kingsmead, ESPNcricinfo reported. Each of the first three days has finished early because of fading light from cloud and haze over Durban, and Australia head into day four 139 runs ahead.

What happened on day three

South Africa were bowled out for 284 in reply to Australia's 390, which had been built on Matt Renshaw's career-best 190 after Australia slipped to 124 for 6. David Bedingham top-scored for South Africa with 49 off 73 balls.

Australia's bowlers shared the wickets: Pat Cummins took 3 for 54, Mitchell Starc 2 for 63, Josh Hazlewood 2 for 54 and Nathan Lyon 2 for 58. South Africa were 197 for 8 before Keshav Maharaj (34) and Simon Harmer (35 not out) added 52 for the ninth wicket.

Australia then batted again and reached 33 without loss. Play ended when Maddinson flicked Wiaan Mulder for six over square leg, fielder Ryan Rickelton indicated he could not pick the ball up in the poor light, and the players left the field.

Why the light matters

Around 45 overs have been lost across the three days, and nearly 13 of them on day three. ESPNcricinfo's Andrew McGlashan projected that if the pattern continues, there will be at least 30 fewer overs remaining than the official tally suggests.

That squeezes the timing of any declaration. Australia's plan, per the Cricinfo piece, is to score at around four an over for roughly 50 overs and push the lead toward 350 before declaring. Every over lost to the light shrinks the time South Africa would have to chase it, and the time Australia would have to bowl them out.

  • Lead: 139 runs with ten second-innings wickets in hand.
  • Australia's target: a lead nearing 350 at about four an over across roughly 50 overs.
  • The catch: at least 30 fewer overs remaining than the official tally if the early finishes continue.

"Nothing we can do about it"

Nathan Lyon, speaking to AAP, accepted that the conditions are out of the players' hands. "There's nothing we can do about it. Whether it's cloud or smog, it is playing a role," he said.
